Privacy Policy
Effective date: 9 October 2026
NT Hazard Maps helps people view and report road hazards, plan journeys and receive road-safety alerts in the Northern Territory. This policy explains what information the service handles and how it is used.
Information you provide
- Account details: name and email address when you register or sign in with email, Google or Apple. Passwords are stored as salted password hashes. Session credentials are stored securely by the app.
- Hazard reports: report type, severity, notes, approximate submitted location, and any photo you choose to attach. Reports may be shown to other users to support road-safety awareness.
- Voice notes: if you choose transcription, the audio is sent to the NT Hazard Maps server for transcription. The audio file is temporary and is removed after the transcription request; you can review the text before adding it to a report.
- Feedback and community content: messages, votes or other content you choose to submit in the app.
Location and device information
With your permission, the app uses device location to show your position, find nearby hazards and support optional route guidance. Raw GPS readings used for live matching are processed to provide these features and are not stored as a continuous journey log. Signed-in users can save recent navigation destinations and route details to their account; guests keep recent destinations on their device. Route details used to provide guidance may be cached on the server for up to 24 hours. If you submit a report, its location is stored with that report. Guest reporting uses a random app-generated device identifier stored on your device to associate your reports.
Our servers may process basic technical information such as IP address and request time to deliver, secure and troubleshoot the service.
How information is used
- Provide maps, hazard reports, alerts, route guidance, accounts and community features.
- Verify sign-in and protect accounts and the service against abuse.
- Maintain, troubleshoot and improve the service and road-safety information.
- Respond to feedback and support requests.
Service providers and sharing
NT Hazard Maps uses OpenStreetMap data for maps. When you explicitly search for a place, the search text is sent to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim place-search service. When you use Google or Apple sign-in, that provider handles authentication under its own privacy terms; NT Hazard Maps receives identity information needed to create or sign in to your account. We do not sell personal information. Report content and its location may be visible to other users as part of the public hazard map. Information may also be disclosed where required by law or to protect users and the service.
Retention and your choices
Account and report information is retained while needed to operate the service, maintain safety records and meet legal or operational requirements. You can use device settings to revoke location or microphone permissions. To request access, correction or deletion of account information, use Send feedback in the app and identify the account email. Some safety reports may be retained or de-identified when an account is closed so the shared road-safety history remains useful.
Children
NT Hazard Maps is a general road-safety service and is not designed for children under 13. Do not create an account if you are under 13.
Changes and contact
We may update this policy as the service changes. The current version will be published at this URL. For privacy questions or requests, use the in-app feedback form at nthmaps.com.au.
